The other night while loitering at Genghis Cohen in West Hollywood I was treated to a close encounter with Jack Riley, best known for his recurring role on the original Bob Newhart Show in the 70s. As he waited for his take-out order I found myself wondering what life must be like for a guy like Jack. His face is instantly recognizable to just about everyone, but almost no one knows his name. “Hey, um … Newhart dude,” they probably say. I’d imagine it’s the kind of situation that leads folks like him to harbor some pretty serious ill will toward the world at large. When Jack finally goes postal, remember you heard it here first.
